VALERIAN
(Valeriana officinalis)

This perennial herb, also known as phu and all-heal, is native to Europe and parts of Asia. The name Valeriana comes from Latin and means "well-being" .
Valerian can grow up to five feet tall and three feet wide. The flowers are very tiny and comes in white, pink or lavender.
Plant valerian in rich, moist, well-drained soil in a sunny location. Once the plant is there it will self-sow and spread by root runners.
Harvest the roots every second year in autumn. Valerian has as a calming effect on your body.
Take internally (capsules, tincture, tea, tablets) for anxiety, nervousness, sleeping disorders based on nervous conditions, headache, high blood pressure, muscle cramps, spasms, stress, tension, menstrual cramps and it's also useful in colic, mild fevers, insomnia, gas pains, stomach cramps and gravel in the bladder.
For insomnia take capsules or tablets (300-500 mg) one hour before you go to bed. If you are using tincture take 5 ml before you go to bed. (You can also try to combine Valerian with Passion Flower.) Apply externally (lotion) for acne and skin rashes. Parts used: Rhizome, root.
This herb may cause sleepiness in some people and should not be used before driving or operating machinery. Don't give Valerian to children under the age of 2. For older children give them half the adult dose. Do not use with sedative or tranquilizing drugs. Don't use for more than three weeks.
